A renowned photographer of candid street scenes, Marcello arrives at the opening of his career retrospective trying to stay incognito. Marcello reputedly has never been photographed himself. Whether that rumor is true, Marcello certainly shuns the spotlight, preferring that his photographs speak for themselves. As he climbs the museum steps, Marcello hides his face from the paparazzi; Nathan, who seems out of place in the throng of photographers, trains his camera on Marcello. Inside, Marcello meets an attractive woman, Ruth, who asks him whether the notoriously reclusive photographer has shown up. Marcello decides to play along, pretending to be just another guest at the opening. After they step outside for a cigarette, Ruth rips into Marcellos work, calling it calendar friendly fluff.¯ She piles on the insults, until she urges Marcello to defend his work. Marcello demands to know what's going on. She can't believe that Marcello doesn't remember her. While Nathan sneaks up with his camera poised to strike, Marcello explains that people aren't his forte. Ruth and Nathan exchange a quick glance, and then before Marcello can reach the door, Nathan smashes him over the head with the camera. Marcello crumples to the ground, unconscious. Marcello wakes in an empty loft space, lashed to a chair in the middle of the room. He tries to makes sense of his surroundings: boxes filled with light fixtures and wires; cans of paint and a gas mask; a saw and a hammer; and a work light aimed directly into his eyes. Nathan enters carrying a file box, his face completely covered by a colorful mask. He congratulates Marcello on getting a good review in the paper. Marcello threatens that people will be looking for him. Nathan shrugs off this threat; since no one expected Marcello to show up, no one realizes he's missing. Nathan assures him that everything will be over in 24 hours. With his back to Marcello, Nathan devours some food. He has traded in the mask for an equally colorful but more revealing one. Marcello gives in and admits that he's hungry. In the next scene, Nathan feeds Marcello pasta as the two talk for the first time. Marcello recognizes Nathans mask as Venetian, and Nathan speaks wistfully of the time when Venetian law required everyone to wear masks. Marcello mentions that he did a series of Venice photos, and Nathan immediately ticks them off by title, displaying his familiarity with Marcellos work.Later, Nathan sets up a camera in front of Marcello. The camera takes a series of self-timer pictures that torture Marcello throughout the night. In the morning, Nathan, wearing an even more revealing mask, attacks Marcellos hypocrisy and demands to know why he doesnt ask permission before taking peoples pictures. Marcello scoffs at this idea; it would make candid shots impossible. And then Nathan removes the mask, revealing himself to Marcello for the first time. Marcello stares back, trying to place him. Clearly Nathan was the subject of one of his photos, but which one? And what does Nathan have planned once that information is revealed? Why has Nathan kidnapped him? And what does Ruth have to do with all this? Can the people in your pictures come back to haunt you? What if you were forced to confront them, without the camera there to protect you? Marcello will learn the answers to all these questions before the 24 hours has expired.
