NEW! ADVENTURE FILMS AT THE BRECKENRIGE FESTIVAL OF FILM
Each year a unique and varied array of independent films, premieres, receptions, educational programs and retrospectives honoring featured guests takes place at the Breckenridge Festival of Film. New this fall 2013 is the adventure films special event. Inspired and fueled by the festival's creative and active Colorado audience, the Adventure Reel is meant to truly embrace the character of the Breckenridge mountain community.
From kayaking down the boulder-choked Black Canyon right here in Colorado to trekking through the untouched Antarctica landscape, the seven short- and feature-length films in the Adventure Reel capture the beauty of nature and adventure in Colorado and abroad.
"We wanted to stay true to our roots of 33 years of bringing independent films to Summit County, but we also want to bring a new generation of festival-goers to our September event," executive director Janice Kurbjun said. "The Adventure Reel does just that. The young and young-at-heart can find their niche at this year's festival through this new addition, and complement their viewing experience with a variety of other fantastic films not included in our Adventure Reel lineup."
It's a new cinematic experience. Time-lapse photography of the Aurora Borealis. Aerial shots of ice climbers at Ouray, Colo. Silhouettes of ski patrollers in our home mountains. Audiences will journey through risky ventures, finding out that people can learn more about themselves by getting off the "beaten path" and by taking a scenic route through life called adventure, one might find meaning and purpose.
"We want the festival to incorporate what is special about Breckenridge and why people love it—which is the outdoors! Although film festivals and outdoor adventure don't always go hand in hand, we wanted to create a new element for the Breckenridge Festival of Film that would integrate the two and offer a unique experience. We anticipate that this segment of the festival will continue to grow throughout the years," film festival board member Lisa Korry Cheek said.
The Adventure Reel screens 7:30-10:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge, which culminates with voting for the coveted People's Choice Award for best Adventure Film.
Kicking off the films are two panel discussions, "Democratization of Film" – answering the question of "Can anyone be a filmmaker?" – and the "Making of the Shot" – in which Adventure Reel filmmakers discuss key shots that viewers may see as visually interesting. Panels begin at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
This event is made possible by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, Beaver Run Resort, Vail Resorts, Town of Breckenridge, The Summit Foundation and many other supporters in the community.
